About

Richard studied at Nottingham Trent University, graduating with first class honours in 2001, at which time he moved to Oxfordshire, where he currently lives and works.

Richard uses vibrant colour to construct a landscape of lush vitality within which the viewer can escape. It is common to become absorbed in his use of mark-making, developed by gradually building layer upon layer of colour, then scraping back and reworking.

This process is the result of both the scrutiny of his subject as well as the painting itself, as he examines the desired balance between realism and abstraction.

What may initially appear to be randomly placed marks are in fact carefully considered and have survived many re-workings. This enforces their sense of belonging; allowing both a glimpse of the journey undertaken and a quiet invitation to the viewer for further exploration.
